i infer that some people in this tribe (and some of my friends) may be onsite at the RNC in a few weeks. others will be out at BM, recharging their awe /expedition batteries... will anyone be doing interesting work or creative contributions in either locale?
i'll be returning to the playa for the first time in 2 years with a multi-bike rickshaw - with no creative theme yet. simply no expectations and a state of sustained mobility. one idea i had was to do voter registration from the rickshaw... what do you think? on my return it's applying to industrial design programs, indyvoter.org volunteering and focusing on professional issues... (and visiting chillits).
kudos to those going to do serious stuff in NYC! i hope everyone is as calm, compassionate and communicative as possible. perhaps in a few weeks this tribe will have some stories to tell.

Re: action to awe and back to action
Thu, August 19, 2004 - 8:13 AMAfter returning home from the Awe to Action conference I knew that I had a job to do in getting the many young people I know (my son's friends) to register to vote. I also knew that between now and the election speaking with EVERYONE about voting in the upcoming election was my duty and the most obvious way to participate in the outside world. In the process of determining our theme for the playa, an idea sprouted. We now have Plan C camp. It's a lemonade slushee/coathanger abortion clinic (AKA voter registration camp). Yes, gritty to say the least, but you have to work hard to get the attention of most playa goers. We are hoping for some critical discussion of the issues and why it is so important for BRC citizens to cast their ballots this fall. I am also a "Real World Greeter" who will be talking with people exiting the playa about the importance of voting in this election. Please come have a lemonade with us. We will be at 6:00 and Jupiter. Hope to see you! -

Re: action to awe and back to action
Thu, August 19, 2004 - 9:49 AMfor me to do to mobile voter registration from the rickshaw, i have to get forms, envelopes and stuff - a lot! anyone where is the best place to pick up forms for CA, NV and other states? i'm sure the answer for CA forms is blatantly obvious - i've just never gone hunting for forms because i always get asked by people on the street about registration...
i'll try to stop by your camp :) -

You may want to print out the PDF (linked at the bottom of the page) and then copy the relevant parts at a Kinko's or something. -

Re: action to awe and back to action
Thu, August 19, 2004 - 12:19 PMYAY!
I have a storage compartment below the rickshaw seat to use for this, a big stack of pens too. If anyone could donate use of their copy machine for the form (I can't afford Kinkos right now), maybe a stack of envelopes too, as well as clipboards, I would *really* appreciate it :)
It kind of makes memmonic (sp?) sense too - 'the voter registration rickshaw'. i like that i can be mobile and just ask people if they would like to register while they're getting a ride... someone at a party last night suggested my playa name could be James Bond-ish, e.g., "The name's Shaw. Rick... Shaw..." heheheh.
