tsunami relief support ?...

i'm surprised this hasn't been discussed in this tribe yet, so here goes...

one of my first impulses was that i should go there and help out physically somehow. but i'm working on projects for income here so that's not realistic (for now). i would be free in september, to take a 'relief work vacation' for a month or so...

does anyone have ideas or information regarding programs and could 'drop in'? this might be anything from manual construction-type labor (house building or permaculture). in the meantime, i'm making a donation.

i do have to say i am in awe of the power of nature, and the deeper feeling of connecting to those people there because of the intensity of what happened. it's humbling and could/has/will happen anywhere, anytime.

    okay... check it:

    Fact Sheet: How to Help Tsunami Disaster Victims
    www.volunteersolutions.org/uwgs....html
    - from the USA Freedom Corps Site

    ... and from the FAQ:

    Q: I want to volunteer in the tsunami disaster relief. Can I?

    A: Volunteer opportunities in disaster settings are extremely rare, and are usually limited to people with prior disaster experience and technical skills (such as health, engineering, etc). The most effective way people can assist relief efforts is through monetary donations to humanitarian organizations that are providing disaster relief services in the affected region. To view a list of reputable charities providing disaster relief for the earthquake and tsunami victims, click here. You can make your donation directly to these organizations by mail, phone, or through their web sites.

    If you are still interested in volunteering, please contact Volunteers for Prosperity, an initiative to encourage international volunteer service that is housed at USAID. Their contact email is volunteersforprosperity@usaid.gov.

    ...the FAQ also says:

    Q: Why is USA Freedom Corps encouraging only monetary donations and how do I make a donation?"

    A: Thank you for your interest in making a donation to assist the earthquake and tsunami victims in South and South East Asia.

    The most effective way people can assist in tsunami relief efforts is through monetary donations to humanitarian organizations that are providing disaster relief services in the affected areas. Cash donations are encouraged because they:

    allow aid professionals to procure quickly and efficiently the exact items needed in the disaster-stricken region;
    reduce the burden on scarce resources in the affected region;
    support the economy of the affected region; and
    ensure assistance that is medically, culturally, and environmentally appropriate.

    There's a easy to read list of charity organizations working in the area. However, I find the idea of a work vacation (4-12 weeks next fall) in the affected areas very compelling.

    Well, my impression is that person-power isn't exactly needed in that part of the world. There are thousands and thousands of people there who are now homeless, and will be working towards rebuilding their homes, their stores, and their lives.

    What is needed is food, medicine, shelter, etc. If you hop on a plane and head over there, you'll be another person who will need to be fed and sheltered while you're doing work.

    If you have a specialized skill (such as a doctor or engineer) your assistance would probably be worth it. Or if you have a helicopter you want to bring over to ferry supplies, that would probably be good. But for the moment, it sounds like your best contribution would be to take the monetary resources you'd use to fly over there, and send that to one of the aid agencies.

    At the same time, I think your desire to provide hands-on, personal support and care is awesome. Your heart is completely in the right place. It just seems that money is more valuable than your two hands at this moment.

    Cheers!

      Thanks Jon! I did quite a bit of research and quickly came to the same conclusion you did - I ended up making a contribution to the Red Cross, then went to some benefit events last weekend.

      I also found out about a program called IDEP in Bali, it's a nonprofit focused on sustainable development that has volunteer programs that I could take part in. I'm connected by degrees of separation to someone who's there now working with this group, and am going to get some first hand info about the programs while applying.

      FYI, this organization is close to Aceh, a severely hit region, and doing a lot of relief work! I hope you'll check out their site. They have some great volunteer programs and I'm going to apply for a two-month stint for this summer; I would probably end up doing more web/tech stuff and permaculture support regardless. In the meantime, I'll keep earning money and donating whenever I can.

      Info about the group is here:
